HANGER BOOK REPORT

WOW!!!  Great job 2nd Grade on your reports!  We were really impressed with your creativity!  Thank you for the time and effort you put into your work.  It truly showed - job well done!


 

CHANGES TO BIBLE TEST

We are now taking Bible Verse tests with no word bank.  Words WILL NOT be marked wrong for misspellings; however, the missing words must be close to the correct spelling.

All Lower School will be singing in our Pops in the Park concert!  Bring your blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy dinner on the lawn while our students sing in this spectacular open-air event.  Our K3 - K5 will be presenting a Barnyard Moosical, while our 1st - 4th graders will be singing ‘POP’ular movie songs like You Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story! Joyful Voices will be singing two special songs.

5:30 - Families can begin arriving to set up blankets and chairs and enjoy a picnic dinner. Bring a picnic with you or purchase food from PTF, who will be offering food options. (More details in email from the Lower School office).

7:00 -  Intermission & 1st - 4th grade students meet

7:20 -  1st - 4th grade students & Joyful Voices

MAY 7th:  FIELD DAY / TEACHER APPRECIATION

Students will enjoy a morning of fun activities planned by Coach Konchak.  This will be a half-day, dismissing at 11:15, in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week.  Students should wear their Lower School green t-shirt and tennis shoes.  Shorts and hats are permitted.  If you want your child to wear sunscreen, it must be applied at home.  Looking forward to a fun day!



Loving Learning


Right now, we are loving learning about:


Bible - We will continue our study of the last part of Moses’ life, as the Israelites’ journey nears the Promised Land.  Our lessons will include:  The Twelve Spies, The Rebellion of Korah, Moses Strikes the Rock, and The Serpent of Brass.


Phonics / Spelling -  We will begin our next list focusing on /are/, /ure/, /ore/.


Grammar / Creative Writing - We will continue our writing unit:  Persuasive Writing.  This week we will be in the Revising, Proofreading, and Publishing stages.  We are using the acronym:  OREO (Opinion, Reasons, Explanation, and restate your Opinion). O - state your opinion, R - give 3 reasons to support your opinion, E - explain why the reader should get on board with your opinion, O - restate your opinion.


Reading - This week we will continue Unit 7:  Cause and Effect.   A review will come home on Thursday for the test on Tuesday, May 11th. 


  • Comprehension Focus:  Cause and Effect

  • Pattern Statement:  One thing can make another thing happen.

  • Visual Tool:  Flow Chart

  • SPECS Logs:  Reader’s Response, Visual Tool, Reflection (Today, I learned…..)

  • Vocabulary:  aeronaut, waded, carriage, acrobats, express train, crouch, jolt, piglets, aloft, altimeter


Math - We will wrap up Unit 8:  Geometry and Arrays.  The Unit 8 Test will be on Wednesday, May 5th.  On Thursday, a Cumulative Test Review will be sent home.  The Cumulative Test will be on Tuesday, May 11th.



Social Studies - We will wrap up Unit 2 with the Test on Tuesday, May 4th.  Next, we will be learning about “Georgia at Work.”  The focus will be on making choices, weighing costs / benefits or the pros / cons, consumers / producers, and discussing how our lives will either make a good impact or a bad impact and how we want to leave the world a better place.

TESTING WEEK:  Thank You!

Parents, thank you for encouraging your child this week to do their best during testing, providing a good breakfast, and getting students to school on time.  We could not have done it without your help!  Students did a great job each day, and we are so proud of them!

Students will be reading one nonfiction book about an animal of their choice.  Your child may choose an appropriate level book for them from the Reading Room, local library, Raz Kids, or getepic.com. They will then plan, write, and design a hanger that displays the main idea and supporting details of the book.  The final project is due by April 30th

Loving Learning

Phonics / Spelling -  The 3 sounds of ed:  /ed/, /d/, /t/.  Examples:  /ed/ as in wanted, /d/ as in played, /t/ as in watched


Grammar / Creative Writing -  We will begin our last writing unit:  Persuasive Writing.  This week will be in the Planning Stage.  We have a very FUN and TASTY format to learn persuasive writing...OREO writing!!!  O - state your opinion, R - give 3 reasons to support your opinion, E - explain why the reader should get on board with your opinion, O - restate your opinion.

Social Studies - We will be wrapping up our Unit on Georgia’s Places, as we review regions, continents, and oceans.  A review will come home on Thursday, for the test on Tuesday, May 4th.

Details for our last book report came home in blue folders on March 25th. Students will be reading one nonfiction book about an animal of their choice.  Your child may choose an appropriate level book for them from the Reading Room, local library, Raz Kids, or getepic.com. They will then plan, write, and design a hanger that displays the main idea and supporting details of the book.  The final project is due by April 30th

STANDARDIZED TESTING 

Testing is April 19-23. Students will take the Iowa & CogAT Assessments. The IOWA test will assess their progress on grade level objectives covered throughout the year. The CogAT will assess their reasoning abilities. This includes verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and nonverbal reasoning. This testing is not something for which students should study.  


For testing week, parents can help their child by: 


1. Getting a good night of rest and arriving at school on time.
2. Eating a healthy breakfast.
3. Sending a healthy snack and water.


During testing week, there will be no homework, no additional tests / quizzes, and very light academics.

EASTER

We have thoroughly enjoyed studying about the Crucifixion and Resurrection, along with the events leading up to those days, during our Bible time the last few weeks.  Our hearts and minds have been focused on the most amazing act of love…”Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” ~ John 15:13  We hope you all have a very blessed Easter!



SPRING BREAK

We pray your family has a relaxing and safe Spring Break, April 5th-9th!  We will miss the students; but, can’t wait to hear about the fun times and memories made with family and friends!

Phonics / Spelling -  Suffixes:  A letter or group of letters that come after a root word.


Grammar / Creative Writing -  We will wrap up Chapter 11.  A review will come home on Monday, for the test on Wednesday, April 14th.


Reading - This week we will introduce Unit 7:  Cause and Effect.
